There are so many places to visit and things to see and do when on vacation in our area. Here we made a list of 10 of our favorite things to see and do for both adults and children while enjoying your vacation.
The list is in no particular order.
Boone’s Greenway Trail
Trails from the house lead you into a quiet tree filled natural area brimming with deer. Small creeks and streams dot the area. Within just a 5-10 minute trail walk, your path through the woods will connect with the Boone Greenway Trail, popular with joggers, walkers, bikers, and families.
2. A visit to Blowing Rock
Downtown Blowing Rock is just 10-15 minutes away, with its charming shops, restaurants and weekend festivals. It’s a great town for strolling and window shopping. An adorable ice cream shop is right on Main Street, along with many well-regarded local restaurants.
3. Dinner out
Vacations are some of our favorite times to explore new restaurants – and there is no shortage of great options in the High Country. Among our favorites are: FARM Cafe, Bistro Roca, New Public House, Our Daily Bread, Daniel Boone Inn, and many more.
4. Relaxing at the House
Some days are best spent relaxing at the house. We’ve stocked the house with games, movies, puzzles, outdoor areas for relaxing, and the fantastic fire pit with enough room for everyone. We often have a camp fire in the evening, roasting marshmallows, telling family stories and just watching the embers.
5. A Great Hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains
The High Country is well known for its many hiking trails. Throw on some trail shoes and find your own little private paradise.
6. Attend a Local Festival, Parade or Football game
Boone is home to the wildly popular App State Mountaineer Football team and fall home games are the place to be. When football is not in session, don’t miss the many festivals and events in the area.
7. The Farmer’s Market
Watauga County is home to a lovely farmer’s market, which opens in early May each year.
8. Shopping on King Street, Downtown Boone
King Street is the center of downtown Boone. You’ll find Mast General Store, King Street Creamery, and a slew of other great family owned restaurants and shops. Parking is free on weekends.
9. Skiing at App Ski Mountain
App Ski Mountain sits right between Boone and Blowing Rock, about 10 minutes from our front door. The mountain has a great reputation for its ski school and welcoming staff. App Ski Mountain is open for night skiing, which is a great way to get some skiing in, and reduced lift prices too.
10. Fishing for Trout
There are several local outfitters who can show you the best local fishing holes and there are also many places to try fly fishing. For kids, there’s a trout pond near Valle Crucis – the trout practically jump onto your hook and you pay by the pound.
