Many of our visitors are parents to students at Applachian State University. The university, with nearly 20,000 students, is known throughout the region as a “happy” campus to attend – sometimes called “Happ State”. Students who love the outdoors particularly enjoy studying in the town of Boone, surrounded by expansive natural areas, secluded hiking trails, rock climbing and many other outdoor adventures.
One of the most popular attractions in Boone is the Appalachian State Football team, the Mountaineers. You’ll find the streets, shops and restaurants packed on fall weekends for games in their home stadium known as “The Rock”.
The university is right in the town of Boone, with it’s charming downtown main street shops, restaurants, coffee shops and more. Just down Highway 321, you’ll find the town of Blowing Rock with it’s unique charm and hidden treasures. Both towns have a number of local events and festivals. More info can be found at the links below:
Blowing Rock Christmas Parade, Blowing Rock Winterfest
In Boone, you can also take advantage of Brewery Tours, a Gem Mine, a local farmers market, spas, golf, trout fishing, river rafting. In the winter, try skiing at App Ski Mountain or tubing at Hawk’s Nest or Jonas Ridge.
Nearby Yadkin Valley is home to North Carolina’s wine country as well as Merlefest music festival each spring.
A weekend away in the mountains is a great chance to just get away from it all. Nap in a hammock in the trees, schedule an afternoon at the spa, or play a few rounds of golf.
There’s so much to explore in the area. And if your style of relaxing is a round of golf, a game of tennis or a day at the spa – those options are convenient as well.
